Legal & Ethical Philosophy Standards I, II, III
When I reflect on my PowerPoint for the Legal and Ethical Issues Assignment, I focused on the fact that schools must have clear rules and responsible online behavior for the faculty, students and families. An example that I used is in 2010, there was a former high school art teacher, Chadwin Reynolds who was caught sending friend requests to a few of his female students, along with leaving inappropriate comments under their photos. There were questions were raised about his Facebook status and behavior, including trying to ask a student to go out with him. This happened because everything was public. So, because the students' and his account were public, it was traced back to him and reported to his job. The lack of privacy settings led to this situation. This could have been avoided if teachers were educated about appropriate social media conduct, the consequences of this type of behavior, and having students as friends online. Schools should implement policies regarding befriending students online and to keep their profiles clean. Going forward, the school should review and create social media policies for staff. Teachers should have been required to have training on maintaining a professional and educational relationship with their students. Parents and students should be aware of any unprofessional remarks or actions made by teachers and report it immediately.
So, as an educator, I will be sure to respect my students' privacy, by keeping any and all information about them private. I want all of my students to feel safe, secure, and valued in my classroom. But at the same time, I will focus on building positive and supportive relationships with them, all while making sure there are healthy boundaries in place. By doing this, it'll create a space where it feels respectful, they can express them, and they feel comfortable learning. But even though technology can be great for collaboration and engagement, I will have to make sure my students aren’t exposed to cyberbullying and misinformation. I also believe in making sure that all my students have equal access to the technology they need to succeed. By balancing legal requirements with ethical practices, I can plan to use technology to improve learning while keeping students’ well-being my top priority.
